June 17, 2019Brooks Koepka, the winner of the 2019 PGA Championship Golf Tournament last month, has found an effective way in dealing with the stress while playing in a major golf tournament. As he began his final round of the PGA Championship, he said in an interview, “It’s just another tournament or round of golf. I tell myself that and strive to make it that, because if I don’t it, becomes too important and I don’t play my game. It comes down to me going out and doing me.”
Our mental preparation for important an event is essential to things working smoothly. Has a closing gone poorly even though you were prepared? Has someone thrown you a curveball right before or in the closing room? Do you mentally prepare before to get your game face on and draw from all your past learning and experience to make sure you are game/closing/examination/administration ready? Every client, file, etc., in our business is important. If we make each file the most important item you’re working on, the result will be that it is the most important. If we make one file more important than any other, it becomes just that. We have to go be ourselves and go do what we do, and know we are good and what we do. If we make a moment or an event bigger than what it is we allow fear from the importance to get in the way of our success.
